The partners of the European project @nclusion have published international and national reports entitled “Professionals’ Attitudes and Knowledge on the Needs of LGBTQI+ Migrants and Refugees”. The reports describe the current situation of this group and point to what can be done to support them better at the local level – in Poland, as well as in Cyprus, Spain, Greece, Germany and Italy.
What is the @nclusion project?
The @nclusion project connects local authorities, migrant organisations, LGBTQI+ organisations and other civil society organisations. Its aims are:
- raising awareness of the difficulties faced by LGBTQI+ migrants and refugees,
- counteracting double discrimination (on the grounds of origin and of sexual orientation, gender identity and other characteristics),
- developing local integration strategies that help LGBTQI+ people feel part of the community in which they live.
The project partners in Poland are Wrocław Municipality (the Wrocław Centre for Social Development and the Office for Equal Treatment of Wrocław City Hall) and Fundacja Ukraina.
What do the reports contain?
The national report from Poland and the international report show the everyday challenges that LGBTQI+ migrants and refugees face in housing, access to the labour market and healthcare.
The publications also include recommendations for improving the situation – e.g. by increasing access to public services.
The report draws on a review of academic literature and national and international publications, as well as an analysis of survey results from employees of Wrocław’s local government and civil society organisations, and of in-depth interviews with LGBTQI+ migrants and refugees (conducted by Fundacja Ukraina).
Key findings of the reports
The findings point, among other things, to the need for:
- building the competences, awareness and knowledge of local authority representatives regarding the challenges faced by LGBTQI+ migrants,
- including the voices of LGBTQI+ migrants in local social dialogue,
- developing and implementing integration strategies that support people in their first steps and later on in their life in a new country,
- facilitating access to information – about the services and support available in the host country.
Why is it important?
The publication of the reports is an important step towards building open and inclusive communities. The findings and recommendations will help shape further activities in the @nclusion project, e.g. training for public officials and staff of civil society organisations. As a result, people supporting LGBTQI+ migrants will be able to do so more effectively and with greater awareness.
