Young leaders from Reykjavík visit Wrocław

A three-day meeting of young people with migration experience from the sister cities of Wrocław and Reykjavík has just come to an end! On 5–7 November 2024, as part of a study visit, a group of seventeen young leaders with migration experience from Reykjavík and Wrocław met in the capital of Lower Silesia to develop their intercultural and civic skills.

The youth meeting took place as part of the partnership project “Young Ambassadors – Młodzi Liderzy”, aimed at teenagers living in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. The aim of the project is to strengthen young people’s skills in advocacy and social issues.

The visit to Wrocław was a key part of the project, which will last until the end of 2024. Young people from Reykjavík aged 12–16, originally from various countries (including Austria, Brazil, Serbia, Ukraine and Poland), met a group of students with migration experience from two Wrocław secondary schools: General Secondary Schools No. XV and No. XVI. Before flying to Wrocław, the teenagers had the opportunity to get to know each other at an online meeting.

The programme of the visit was built around educational and integration activities. The young leaders took part in a training session shaping their perception of social diversity, entitled “We. You. They. The host society and the challenges of integration”, led by a pair of trainers from Fundacja EkoRozwoju, Aneta Osuch and Arkadiusz Wierzba. The training, tailored to the needs of a young audience, aimed to give participants tools to identify and overcome the challenges of living in a multicultural community.

During their visit to Przejście Dialogu (Passage of Dialogue), the teenagers also played an intercultural game and took part in a workshop on the intercultural city of their dreams, led by Ambassador of Dialogue Małgorzata Czaicka-Moryń.

The time in Wrocław was also devoted to getting to know one another and exploring what the city has to offer together. Thanks to the support of the Foreign Cooperation Office of Wrocław City Hall, visits to Wrocław Zoo and the Aquapark were arranged.

We would like to thank the participants of the project and its partners: the Office for Human Rights and Democracy of the City of Reykjavík Reykjavíkurborg, General Secondary School No. XV in Wrocław, General Secondary School No. XVI and the Foreign Cooperation Office of Wrocław City Hall.
